Sustainability — Alor Diving Expeditions’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Alor Diving Expeditions, we operate on a simple, powerful principle: the pristine environment and vibrant communities of the Alor archipelago are not just our core business assets; they are our most important stakeholders. Our license to operate is a privilege granted by nature and the local people, and with it comes a profound responsibility. Our commitment to sustainability is not a marketing initiative—it is woven into every aspect of our operations, from vessel design to supply chain management and guest experiences. Our approach is holistic, focusing on measurable impacts across marine conservation, carbon footprint reduction, and community empowerment.

Marine Conservation in Action

The health of Alor’s reefs is the lifeblood of our expeditions. We are committed to being active stewards of this underwater paradise.

  • Financial Contributions: A dedicated 5% of our net profit is donated annually to our partner conservation organizations, including Thresher Shark Indonesia and local initiatives supporting the Alor Marine Protected Area (MPA).
  • Data Collection: Our dive guides are trained in coral reef monitoring (using Reef Check protocols) and marine megafauna identification. All sighting data for key species (sharks, rays, cetaceans) is submitted to a national database managed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to aid in scientific research and policy-making.
  • Strict No-Touch Policy: We enforce a strict, zero-tolerance policy for touching, harassing, or collecting any marine life. This is a core part of our pre-dive briefings and a condition of diving with us.
  • Mooring Buoy Maintenance: We actively fund and assist in the maintenance of existing mooring buoys at popular dive sites and advocate for the installation of new ones to prevent anchor damage on sensitive reefs.

Environmental Footprint Reduction

We recognize that expedition travel has an environmental impact. We are committed to continuously measuring, reducing, and offsetting our footprint.

  • Single-Use Plastic Elimination: Our vessels are 100% free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags. We provide guests with reusable stainless steel water bottles and use a state-of-the-art water filtration system. All toiletries provided are in refillable, biodegradable containers.
  • Waste Management: All waste generated on board is sorted and brought back to the mainland for proper disposal. We partner with the local ‘Bank Sampah’ (Waste Bank) initiative in Kalabahi to ensure plastics and other recyclables are processed correctly, not burned or sent to landfill.
  • Carbon Offsetting: We calculate the carbon footprint of each expedition, including vessel fuel consumption and domestic flights. We then invest in certified carbon offset projects, focusing on Indonesian-based reforestation and renewable energy initiatives, to render each journey carbon-neutral.
  • Sustainable Sourcing: Over 80% of our fresh produce is sourced directly from local markets and farmers in Alor, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy. We prioritize sustainably caught seafood, adhering to WWF Indonesia’s seafood guide.

Community Empowerment & Partnership

Our success is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the Alorese people. We are committed to being a positive force for economic and social development.

  • Local Employment: Over 75% of our crew, including boat crew, guides, and operational support staff, are hired from local communities in Nusa Tenggara Timur, with a majority from Alor itself. We invest in their training and professional development, providing pathways to senior roles like captain and divemaster. Meet some of them on our Our Team page.
  • Support for Traditional Crafts: We facilitate respectful and non-transactional visits to local villages, such as the Abui people in Takpala, known for their unique culture. We provide a platform for artisans to sell their traditional ‘Ikat’ weavings and other crafts directly to our guests at fair prices, with no commission taken.
  • Community Development Fund: In addition to our conservation fund, we contribute to a community development fund that supports education and health initiatives in the villages we partner with, identified in consultation with village elders.

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement. We believe that true luxury is experiencing the world’s most beautiful places in a way that ensures they remain beautiful for generations to come.
