Shore or boat
A land base swaps a moving cabin for a fixed room. You get a house reef you can dive on your own clock and evenings on solid ground. For divers who get seasick, travel with non-diving partners, or want an unhurried pace, the resort model wins.
The trade-off is range. A liveaboard reaches the most remote corners of the Alor–Pantar arc directly, while a shore base works a rich cluster within boat range — 40-plus sites inside 30 to 45 minutes, which keeps most of Alor's signature diving on the daily menu.
Quick rule: choose land if you value comfort, macro photography and flexibility; choose a liveaboard if you want maximum site variety in a single trip.

The base
The reference base on Pantar takes 16 divers in standard and deluxe bungalows built in local traditional style, runs small low-emission boats and draws on its own underground water reserve.
That small capacity matters: Alor's marine protected area caps diver numbers per site by WWF-determined carrying capacity, so a 16-guest base rarely feels crowded underwater.
Timing
Best conditions run April to November, with October and November bringing the most prevalent currents and the biggest pelagic odds.

Blue whale and hammerhead encounters are possible, not guaranteed. Kalabahi Bay's black-sand muck stays reliable year-round because its macro critters don't travel far.

No citable public price table exists for Alor dive packages or the marine park fee. Final quotes depend on season, bungalow grade, group size and partner availability.
Budget separately for the marine park fee and permit, DAN dive-accident insurance, return flights to Alor (usually via Kupang) and equipment rental. No sightings or outcomes are attached to any package.

Non-negotiable
Every diver, snorkeller and marine tourist attends a mandatory MPA officer briefing, pays a marine park fee and holds a permit before any water activity. Fishing and spearfishing are off-limits to visitors.
Protected species here include coral reefs, turtles, marine mammals, thresher sharks, mangroves, seagrasses and pelagic fish.
Straight answers
Alor rewards experience. Resorts accept PADI Open Water as the minimum for fun diving, but most recommend 50 to 100 logged dives before tackling the Pantar Strait's strong currents, which demand rapid descents and regrouping around 5 metres. Newer divers can still enjoy calmer house-reef and Kalabahi muck sites while building comfort.
Most Pantar resorts schedule two to four guided dives daily, with 40-plus sites reachable within 30 to 45 minutes by boat, plus optional house-reef dives between trips. All dives stay within no-decompression limits, solo diving isn't allowed, and guides typically end a dive at 60 minutes or when a diver reaches 50 bar.
Yes. DAN or equivalent dive-accident insurance is mandatory because the nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Bali, and evacuation and chamber costs are not covered by standard medical insurance. You will also attend the marine protected area briefing, pay the marine park fee, and hold a permit before any diving.
Conditions are best from April to November, with October and November bringing the most current and pelagic action. Dry-season visibility from June to October can reach around 40 metres, while May–September plankton blooms can drop it below 15. September is widely rated the best month to spot mola mola.
Yes. A single Pantar base puts Kalabahi Bay's volcanic black-sand muck sites and the Pantar Strait's gorgonian walls within reach. Macro critters like Pegasus sea moths, mimic octopus and frogfish stay put year-round, while the strait favours wide-angle scenes of schooling fish and, with luck, mola mola or dolphins.
