A real gate
The Pantar Strait throws strong surface currents. They force a fast, controlled descent, quick equalising and a regroup around 5 metres before the reef takes over. Operators here set a real experience gate, not a marketing one.
Minimum PADI Open Water covers gentle fun dives. But the walls, channels and pelagic sites that define an advanced package assume you can hold buoyancy in moving water and manage your own gas. PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent is the practical floor for the signature current sites.
Alor is managed as a marine protected area: a mandatory MPA briefing, a marine park fee and a permit are required before any diving, guides must hold special MPA certification, and diver numbers per site are capped by WWF-determined carrying capacity.
The gate, site by site
Most dives sit in the 15 to 25 metre band. One documented site goes deeper and asks considerably more of you.

Blue whales and hammerheads are framed honestly: possible, not predictable. Anyone promising a guaranteed sighting on a fixed date is selling you something the ocean never agreed to. September is the strongest month for mola mola.

Operators representatively ask for PADI Advanced Open Water as the practical floor, with 50 to 100 logged dives recommended for real comfort in Pantar Strait currents. Fewer dives may suit calmer sites, but the signature walls and the ~32-metre hammerhead site reward experience and solid fitness.
Yes. A DAN or equivalent dive-accident policy is mandatory before boarding because the nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Bali, and standard travel medical insurance does not cover chamber treatment or dive evacuation. Every dive is also planned no-decompression. We verify your policy before confirming any trip.
Conditions are best April to November, with October–November bringing the most prevalent currents and dry-season visibility up to roughly 40 metres between June and October. September is the strongest month for mola mola. Liveaboards through Alor–Pantar typically run the September–October window, so those cabins book out earliest.

Minimum PADI Open Water covers gentle fun dives only; the walls, channels and deep pelagic sites assume solid buoyancy in moving water and self-sufficient gas management. Alor also caps divers per site by WWF-set carrying capacity, so slots favour qualified, experienced divers.
